1980-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
Error
Description
Carrying the Wexler designation 1980-D 1¢ WDDR-001, this doubled die reverse variety on the 1980 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial cent exhibits a close Class II spread directed towards the center, visible on the designer's initials (FG, for Frank Gasparro) and the lower portion of the second A in AMERICA. Class II hub doubling — also known as distorted hub doubling — occurs when the hub is rotated between impressions during the die-sinking process, producing a radial displacement pattern where the spread direction points toward or away from a central pivot point. The tight, center-directed spread on the designer's initials and the second A in AMERICA indicates that these elements were positioned near the periphery of the rotation arc, where displacement is most visible. Die markers confirm the specific die identity: on the reverse, a die gouge appears to the right of the lower F in OF, and another die gouge sits above the right side of the second U in PLURIBUS. No obverse die markers have been noted. The 1980-D cent represents the first year of Denver production in which the companion Philadelphia issue received a P mintmark — a significant transition in U.S. coinage that makes 1980 a year of particular interest to date collectors and variety specialists alike. No additional cross-references from other attribution services are known for this variety. The coin was struck from 95% copper planchets. Attribution by the Wexler Team.
