Description
The 1979 (S) Susan B. Anthony Dollar is a dollar produced at the San Francisco Mint as part of the Susan B. Anthony Dollars 1979-1999 series. The U.S. Mint produced 109.6 million examples, making this the lowest mintage among 4 mint variants, representing only 10% of total production. The obverse features Susan B. Anthony facing right, the first woman depicted on a U.S. circulating coin and the reverse displays an eagle landing on the moon, adapted from the Apollo 11 mission patch. First year of the Susan B. Anthony Dollar — the first circulating U.S. coin to depict a real woman. The 1979-P Wide Rim (Near Date) variety is scarcer than the standard Narrow Rim. Public rejection was immediate due to confusion with the quarter. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $1 to $7 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 8.1 grams, 26.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9573.
