Description
A proof striking of the J-2175 Susan B. Anthony dollar pattern, produced at the Philadelphia Mint in 1979 with polished dies and controlled striking conditions. The proof version of J-2175 showcases Frank Gasparro's designs at their sharpest and most detailed — the mirror-finish fields and frosted devices of the proof format reveal every nuance of Susan B. Anthony's portrait on the obverse and the Apollo 11 Eagle-landing-on-Moon reverse. The proof format was particularly important for evaluation of the SBA dollar design because the production coin's small size made fine design detail critical: collectors and the public needed to be able to clearly identify Anthony's features and the reverse imagery at the 26.5mm diameter. This proof pattern shares the J-2175 designation with the business-strike version, distinguished by its proof finish and produced in even smaller quantities. Together, the proof and business-strike versions of J-2175 demonstrate the Mint's parallel evaluation of the design for both the collector proof set market and everyday circulation.
