Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1979-D 1¢ WDDR-001, this doubled die reverse variety on the 1979 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial cent displays extra thickness on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the doubling particularly evident on the lower serifs of several letters, along with visible spread on the two dots flanking the left side of E PLURIBUS UNUM. The extra thickness pattern — affecting lettering serifs preferentially — is characteristic of a minor hub doubling event in which the secondary hub impression was displaced just enough to thicken the design elements without producing clearly separated secondary images. Die markers provide the definitive confirmation for this attribution: on the reverse, a die scratch runs from the lower third column northwest into the second bay of the Lincoln Memorial, a diagonal die scratch appears within the lower E of AMERICA, and a short, slightly diagonal die scratch sits above the right side of the F in OF. No obverse die markers have been noted, indicating that diagnostic confirmation relies primarily on reverse examination. No additional cross-references from other attribution services are known for this variety, placing its documentation exclusively within the Wexler catalog system. The 1979-D cent bears Denver's hand-punched D mintmark and was struck from the standard 95% copper alloy. Attribution by the Wexler Team.
