1977-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
Error
Description
Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1977-D 1¢ WDDR-001, this doubled die reverse on the 1977 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial cent displays a Class II spread towards the center on the letters of AMERICA, with the effect easiest to see on the lower right R. Class II doubling results from a slight rotational displacement of the hub between successive impressions during the die-making process, and the concentration of visible doubling on the lower right R of AMERICA indicates that this letter occupied a position where the rotational spread was most pronounced relative to the viewer's perspective. The die markers for this variety are extensive on both sides of the coin. On the obverse, a die scratch runs from north to south to the right of the first T in TRUST, and numerous die scratches run from southwest to northeast both in front of and behind the bust. On the reverse, parallel die scratches run from southwest to northeast above the right end of the Memorial roof, and a die scratch runs northwest from the top left of the N in ONE. The obverse die marker section in the original attribution notes trails off, suggesting the documentation may have been truncated or that no additional obverse markers beyond those listed were recorded. Denver's "D" mint mark was still hand-punched into working dies during 1977, and the cent continued to use the 95% copper composition. No additional cross-reference numbers beyond the Wexler designation are known for this variety. Attribution by the Wexler Team.
