1975 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Attributed as 1975 1¢ WDDR-001 by the Wexler Team, this doubled die reverse variety from the Philadelphia Mint displays a Class II spread directed toward the center on the lower letters of ONE CENT, AMERICA, and the designer's initials FG (Frank Gasparro). Class II (rotated hub) doubling produces a pivoted spread that intensifies with distance from the rotation axis, and the inward-directed spread on this variety indicates the hub was slightly rotated between successive impressions during die manufacture. Notching — small, step-like shelf formations on the lower edges of affected letters — is visible on some of the lower letters in AMERICA, providing a particularly distinctive diagnostic feature. On the reverse, a strong vertical die gouge between the E and R in AMERICA serves as a primary identifying marker, accompanied by a die gouge running east-southeast from the rim above the E in STATES. Two long parallel die scratches extend from the bottom of the I in UNITED to the lower left section of the Memorial, and numerous additional die scratches are distributed throughout the reverse. No significant obverse die markers have been noted. The combination of Class II hub doubling on the denomination and designer's initials, the characteristic letter notching, and the extensive network of reverse die scratches and gouges makes WDDR-001 readily distinguishable from other 1975 Philadelphia reverse varieties.
