1972-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-004

Description

Assigned the VarietyVista catalog identifiers UVC-449 and DMR-007, the 1972-S DDR-004 is a doubled die reverse on the proof Kennedy half dollar showing medium spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, HALF DOLLAR, the stars in the circle, and the right rays, with the strongest displacement on STATES OF. Proof Kennedy halves from 1972 were struck in copper-nickel clad at the San Francisco Mint, two years after the silver clad proof era ended. Three die stages have been documented. Stage A places both the reverse and obverse at early die state. Stage B represents mid-die state, though it remains unconfirmed. Stage C, the late die state, is also unconfirmed. The medium spread across multiple reverse design elements, particularly the heraldic eagle's surrounding inscriptions and the decorative stars and rays, makes this a variety with broad visual impact. Frank Gasparro's reverse design, featuring the presidential seal eagle with its circle of stars and radiating rays, provides intricate detail where hub displacement creates clearly defined secondary images.
