Third in the Wexler Team's sequence of cataloged doubled die reverses for the 1972-S proof Kennedy Half Dollar, WDDR-003 adds another entry to what has become one of the more prolific proof DDR concentrations in the Kennedy Half Dollar series. The 1972-S proof production used 40% silver clad planchets (11.5 grams, with 80% silver / 20% copper outer layers bonded to a silver-copper core), and the proof striking process — involving polished dies, polished planchets, and multiple strikes at elevated pressure — creates conditions where hub doubling signatures transfer with exceptional clarity and sharpness compared to business-strike surfaces. This enhanced transfer fidelity means that even subtle hub misalignments that might be nearly invisible on a circulation-quality strike become detectable on proof surfaces, which partially explains why proof dates like 1972-S accumulate larger numbers of cataloged DDR varieties than their business-strike counterparts. The WDDR-003 designation under the Wexler cross-reference system (1972-S 50-cent Proof WDDR-003) establishes this as a distinct die from WDDR-001 through WDDR-002 and subsequent entries, each representing a separate reverse working die that received a flawed hubbing impression.
