Spanning an unusually broad six areas of the reverse design, DDR-001 on the 1972-S Proof Washington Quarter exhibits light spread on both olive branch stems, QUARTER DOLLAR, the left lower leaves of the olive branch, the eagle's wing tip, and RICA of AMERICA. Joe Miller reported this variety. The six-zone distribution — covering both botanical elements (stems and leaves), the denomination, the eagle's anatomy, and partial inscription text — indicates a hub displacement broad enough to produce detectable offset across essentially the entire lower half of John Flanagan's reverse design. The partial-word involvement on AMERICA is particularly diagnostic: only RICA shows doubling, meaning the displacement vector's magnitude fell below the visibility threshold on AME while remaining detectable on the last four letters, which occupy positions where the offset direction aligned more favorably with the letterforms. The involvement of both stems (left and right) alongside the left lower leaves demonstrates that the olive branch — a relatively fine design element — served as an especially sensitive indicator of hub displacement, with its thin botanical lines registering offset that might be undetectable on bolder design features. As DDR-001, this variety holds the primary reverse catalog position for the 1972-S proof, representing the most significant documented reverse hub doubling for this date-mint combination. The 1972-S proof was struck at the San Francisco Mint in copper-nickel clad composition on polished planchets with mirror-finish dies, available through annual proof sets. The proof surfaces enhance visibility of the light spread across all six zones. Examination should begin at the olive branch stems and wing tip under 7x to 10x magnification, where the fine botanical and anatomical lines best reveal the subtle displacement.
