Description
The 1972 Eisenhower Dollar - Type 3 is a dollar minted at the Philadelphia Mint, within the Eisenhower Dollars 1971-1978 series. The U.S. Mint produced 75.9 million examples, making this ranked 2nd of 5 mint variants by mintage, with 24% of production. The obverse features Dwight D. Eisenhower facing left and the reverse displays an eagle landing on the moon with an olive branch in its talons, commemorating the Apollo 11 lunar landing. Three reverse varieties exist: Type 1 (most common), Type 2 (high-relief Earth struck from a proof die, scarce), and Type 3 (refined design used from 1973 onward). Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding. Estimated market value ranges from $1 to $7 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 22.7 grams, 38.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7409.
