1971-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002

Description

Second in the reverse doubled die census for the 1971-S Jefferson nickel, DDR-002 presents medium spread on the right building details of Monticello with rotational spread increasing from left to right on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIVE CENTS. The progressive increase in spread magnitude across the inscriptions — growing stronger as the design elements move rightward — is characteristic of a rotational hub displacement where the secondary impression pivoted around a point on the left side of the die. VarietyVista assigned identifiers UVC-1401 and DMR-018, and the comments note that the reverse employs RDV-006 (strong railings), the same reverse design variant seen on the DDR-001 for this date. Felix Schlag's Monticello design provides rich architectural detail — columns, windows, railings, and roofline elements — that serves as an excellent canvas for detecting hub doubling, as the geometric regularity of the building makes any displacement immediately apparent against the expected straight lines and symmetrical proportions. San Francisco struck approximately 106.88 million nickels in 1971, following the resumption of S-mintmark coinage after the 1965-1967 mintmark moratorium. The medium spread classification indicates the doubling is clearly detectable at moderate magnification but does not reach the dramatic separation associated with strong spread varieties. Collectors should direct their examination to the right side of the Monticello building under 15x magnification, where the rotational spread is most pronounced, then trace the progressive increase in displacement through UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIVE CENTS moving from left to right across the reverse field.
