Attributed by Ben Peters and cross-referenced under the Wexler system as 1970-S WDDR-012, this proof Jefferson Nickel reverse exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling. Close examination reveals the doubling concentrated on E PLURIBUS UNUM, where the secondary hub impression shifted during contact with the working die, creating spread characteristic of lateral hub displacement. On the reverse, a die gouge between the lower portions of the first and second columns of Monticello serves as the primary diagnostic marker, while the obverse shows no noted die markers. The 1970-S proof Jefferson Nickel was struck at San Francisco exclusively for proof sets, as no business strike nickels were produced at San Francisco during this year. Proof surfaces with their mirror-like fields and frosted devices provide ideal conditions for detecting even subtle hub doubling, making the close spread on the motto discernible under standard magnification.
