1970-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-010
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista, the 1970-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-010 on the Jefferson Nickel shows light spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and OF AMERICA with the doubling intensity increasing from left to right across the inscriptions. The Jefferson Nickel, designed by Felix Schlag with the Monticello reverse, was struck at the San Francisco Mint in cupronickel (75% copper, 25% nickel) at 5.00 grams and 21.2 mm diameter. Die markers assigned by VarietyVista are UVC-1384 and DMR-027, with three documented die states: Stage A at Early Die State shows several small die gouge dots between the pillars of Monticello and the obverse is also EDS, Stage B indicates both reverse and obverse have progressed to Mid Die State, and Stage C at Late Die State remains unconfirmed. The small die gouge dots between the Monticello pillars visible in Stage A provide the most reliable die markers for attribution, as they precede any die deterioration that might obscure them in later states. The 1970-S had comparatively low business strike mintage, and the San Francisco Mint was transitioning to primarily proof production duties. The leftward-to-rightward increasing spread pattern is consistent with a hub shift during the die-making process where the displacement grew progressively across the die face.
