Description

Attributed by William Hostutler and cataloged under the Wexler system, this thirty-second doubled die reverse for the 1969-S Proof Jefferson Nickel displays Class II Distorted Hub Doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the doubling increasing from left to right across the reverse design. This progressive intensification from left to right is a hallmark of Class II doubling, where a tilted or pivoted hub creates a fanning effect that concentrates at the periphery farthest from the pivot point — in this case, the right side of the reverse experienced greater displacement because it was farther from the axis of rotation. Die markers include no notable obverse features and a die scratch on the rim below the N of UNITED on the reverse. Cross-referenced under Wexler Variety ID: 1969-S WDDR-032 Proof, the proof designation confirms this die was used in San Francisco's proof coining operation — the Mint having transferred all proof production to San Francisco beginning in 1968. The 1969-S is a date of tremendous significance for doubled die collectors because it shares a year with the famous 1969-S Doubled Die Obverse Lincoln Cent, one of the most valuable modern U.S. coin varieties. Thirty-two documented doubled die reverses for the 1969-S proof nickel reflects the depth of variety research conducted on proof coins from this era. Hostutler's attribution adds this variety to a growing body of Class II doubled die documentation that helps researchers understand the mechanical causes and visual signatures of tilted-hub doubling events during proof die manufacture.
