Description

Presenting Class II (Distorted Hub) tripled spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, this 1969-S Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDR-028 goes beyond standard doubled die territory with three distinct hub impressions creating layered secondary lettering. Tripled spread — where the hub contacted the die three separate times with progressive displacement — is considerably less common than typical doubled dies and produces a more complex visual effect on affected inscriptions. Attributed by Ben Peters, this proof variety carries distinctive die markers on both sides. The obverse shows a die gouge below OD of GOD. On the reverse, a series of die gouges appear between and above the B and the second U of PLURIBUS, creating a cluster of raised metal spots that serve as a reliable die fingerprint. The multiple gouges in the PLURIBUS area are particularly useful for confirming the specific die, as their clustered arrangement is unlikely to be duplicated on another die. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1969-S WDDR-028 Proof, this San Francisco proof nickel demonstrates how tripled Class II spread on major inscriptions creates a variety of heightened visual interest and diagnostic clarity compared to standard two-impression doubled dies.
