Description

Discovered by Brian A. Ribar, this 1969-S Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDR-023 is classified as Class II Distorted Hub Doubling with a very close spread affecting E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Die markers on the reverse include a die gouge to the right of the S in PLURIBUS and die gouges below the center crossbar of the E in AMERICA — both useful diagnostics for confirming this specific die. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1969-S WDDR-023 Proof, this variety appears on proof strikes from the San Francisco Mint, which had assumed exclusive proof production duties beginning in 1968 after the three-year hiatus in proof set manufacturing. Distorted Hub Doubling on proof dies produces characteristically subtle spread that can challenge even experienced attributors, as the very close displacement may initially appear to be strike doubling or die deterioration. The die gouges flanking key inscription letters provide the confirmatory evidence needed to distinguish WDDR-023 from similar-appearing anomalies.
