1969-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-022
ErrorDescription
Designated Wexler 1969-S WDDR-022 Proof, this San Francisco proof Jefferson Nickel carries Class II Distorted Hub Doubling with a close spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and a slightly stronger spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The differential spread intensity between these two reverse legends is a hallmark of Class II doubling, where the distortion varies across the die face depending on distance and angle from the rotational center of the hub-to-die misalignment. Reverse die markers include a die gouge between the S of PLURIBUS and the first U of UNUM, along with a light die scratch on the rim below the F of OF. Attributed by Timothy Wissert, this variety was struck at the San Francisco Mint during the second year of resumed proof production — the Mint had transferred all proof coinage from Philadelphia to San Francisco beginning in 1968, inaugurating a new chapter in proof manufacturing. The 1969-S proof Jefferson Nickel was composed of the standard copper-nickel clad alloy that had replaced silver in circulating coinage after 1965, and proof doubled dies from this early San Francisco proof era document the facility as it refined its role as the nation’s dedicated proof mint.
