1969-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-014
ErrorDescription
Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, this 1969-S Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDR-014 presents Class II (Distorted Hub) doubling with a close spread visible on E PLURIBUS UNUM, OF AMERICA, and the right side of the Monticello building. Class II distortion produces a tight secondary impression where slight hub flexion during the die-making process creates detectable displacement across the die face. The building's architectural detail — particularly the columned portico and the roofline on the right side — provides fine geometry that reveals even close-spread doubling effectively. No significant obverse die markers have been noted. On the reverse, a die gouge appears above the P of PLURIBUS, and a second die gouge sits near the rim below IC of AMERICA, providing two discrete confirmation points for die identification. As a proof coin struck at the San Francisco Mint, the mirrored fields and sharp detail enhance the visibility of the close Class II spread. Cross-referenced under the Wexler designation 1969-S WDDR-014 Proof, this variety demonstrates how the Monticello building's fine architectural lines serve as effective diagnostic zones for detecting hub distortion that might be less visible on broader design elements.
