Description

Displaying the hallmarks of Class II Distorted Hub doubling, this 1969-S Proof Jefferson Nickel shows a pronounced spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM alongside a much closer, tighter spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA — two distinct levels of displacement on the same reverse die demonstrating how the hub's distortion affected different design areas with varying intensity. John A. Wexler cataloged the variety as WDDR-008 Proof, and the dual-intensity spread across two separate legend groups provides a distinctive diagnostic profile. A small die gouge on the left side of the I in UNITED serves as the primary reverse die marker, while the obverse carries no noted markers. San Francisco Proof Jefferson Nickels from 1969 were struck with polished dies on specially prepared planchets, producing mirror-like fields that make even subtle doubling stand out under magnification. The contrast between the stronger spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and the closer spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA illustrates how hub distortion creates a gradient of displacement, with areas closer to the point of maximum warping receiving greater offset.
