Description

Attributed by John A. Wexler, this 1969-S Proof Jefferson Nickel displays a combination of Class II and Class VI doubling, indicating both distorted and distended hub effects contributed to the variety. A nice spread is visible on E PLURIBUS UNUM, while closer spread appears on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the doubling affecting multiple reverse design elements across Felix Schlag's Monticello composition. The 1969-S proof was struck at San Francisco as part of the regular annual proof set, continuing the program resumed in 1968 after the three-year SMS hiatus. On the obverse, a die gouge inside the O of GOD provides a diagnostic marker. Reverse die markers include a die gouge above the R in PLURIBUS and a die gouge patch inside the upper portion of the second U in PLURIBUS. The combination of two doubling classes on a single die indicates the hub experienced both distortion and distension during the impression process.
