1969-S Proof Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002
ErrorDescription
Filed under the 1969 (S) Proof Lincoln Memorial Cent parent, this listing for WDDR-002 documents the same proof doubled die reverse variety from the proof-strike perspective. A strong spread towards the center shows on ONE CENT and the designer's initials FG, with a lighter spread towards the center on USA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the dots — the strongest spread concentrating on the lower half of the reverse design. The center-directed spread pattern indicates the hub shifted inward (toward the die center) between impressions, compressing the design elements relative to their intended positions and producing noticeable doubling on the outermost lettering and devices. Die markers on the obverse include a light die scratch running SSW from the bottom of the first 9 in the date, while the reverse shows no significant markers beyond the doubling itself. The proof striking process — utilizing specially prepared, polished dies and planchets struck at reduced speed with multiple impressions — renders even moderate hub doubling with remarkable clarity, as the mirror-finish fields provide contrast that makes displaced design elements immediately apparent. This variety represents one of only a handful of proof doubled die reverses documented for the Lincoln Memorial cent series from the late 1960s San Francisco Mint production.
