1968-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Cross-referenced as CONECA 1-R-I and Cherrypickers FS-25-1968D-801, the 1968-D Washington quarter Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001 ranks among the most significant DDRs in the clad quarter series. An extremely strong Class I CCW spread affects USA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, QUARTER DOLLAR, the wreath, and both tips of the eagle's wings. Reverse die markers include a diagonal die scratch left of the A in DOLLAR, a short die scratch from the bottom center of the A in STATES, and a vertical die scratch above the L in PLURIBUS. No obverse markers have been noted. The Cherrypickers FS-25-1968D-801 listing confirms the variety's standing in that key specialist reference. Class I (rotational) doubling produces a clear separated secondary image following the arc of hub rotation; on WDDR-001 that spread is extremely strong, making it one of the most visually dramatic clad-era quarter varieties known. The 1968-D, struck at Denver in copper-nickel clad, was among the first issues after the 1965 silver-to-clad transition.
