1967 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

Found in 1967 Special Mint Sets, this Washington Quarter carries a doubled die reverse attributed by the Wexler Team under Variety ID 1967 25-cent WDDR-005 and cross-referenced as CONECA 2-R-II+VI and Cherrypickers' Guide FS-25-1967-801. The reverse exhibits spread toward center combined with light Class VI extra thickness on QUARTER DOLLAR and the branches, with slight effect on UNITED and AMERICA. Obverse die markers are numerous: die scratches on the rim below the date, a die gouge above OD in GOD, a large die gouge below the L in LIBERTY level with the brow, and a die gouge below the Y in LIBERTY. The reverse carries a long die scratch through the eagle's left wing, die scratches on the rim around the entire reverse, a die gouge right of the first L in DOLLAR, gouges on the leaf above the R in DOLLAR, a gouge right of the last T in STATES, a gouge below A in STATES, and a gouge on the bottom of I in UNITED. The 1967 SMS was produced during the three-year period when the Mint substituted Special Mint Sets for traditional proof sets, and doubled dies from SMS issues are particularly sought by collectors.
