SKH-1c-1967-08 Spiked Head
Error
Description
Designated SKH-1c-1967-08, this eighth spiked head variety for the 1967 Lincoln cent carries the Cohen Index cross-reference 67-56D and a documentation date of October 20, 2017 — more than a year after the cluster of varieties documented in April 2016. The later documentation date illustrates that the cataloging of spiked heads is an ongoing process: new varieties continue to surface as collectors examine coins from bank rolls, accumulations, and estate collections decades after the coins were struck. The 67-56D designation places this within the same fifty-sixth Cohen grouping as the previous entry's 67-56H, reinforcing the observation that this particular spike position is an especially productive zone for die deterioration on 1967 Lincoln cent dies. The "D" suffix (the fourth sub-variant) was documented before the "H" suffix (the eighth), which means the sub-variants within a Cohen grouping are not necessarily cataloged in chronological order — they are assigned sequentially as new examples are identified and reported. For collectors, the practical significance is that any examination of 1967 cents has a reasonable chance of yielding a spiked head variety, given the enormous die population and the proven frequency of this failure mode. The 1967 cent was produced without mint marks at the Philadelphia Mint, with a business strike mintage of 3,048,667,100. Attributed by Cuds on Coins. Struck on a 3.11-gram, 19mm planchet of 95% copper and 5% zinc.
