Medium spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the stars beneath those letters marks DDR-009 on the 1967 SMS Kennedy Half Dollar — a Special Mint Set striking from the three-year period (1965–1967) when standard proof sets were suspended. Attributed by VarietyVista as UVC-122 with die marriage DMR-017, Stage A at early die state shows a diagnostic die gouge dot under the U of UNITED on both obverse and reverse, while Stage B shows both dies at mid die state and Stage C remains unconfirmed. The SMS designation indicates this variety was struck with the distinctive finish used during the no-mint-mark era, producing coins with a quality between business strike and proof. The Kennedy Half Dollar's reverse, designed by Frank Gasparro, features a heraldic eagle with stars — and the doubling affecting both the lettering and the stars beneath provides multiple identification points. SMS Kennedy Half Dollars from 1967 were struck in 40% silver clad composition.
