1967 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-006

Description

Identified on a 1967 Special Mint Set Kennedy Half Dollar, this doubled die reverse exhibits a light triple spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the stars around the rim with the strongest doubling at the top, including stars between the rays, and a light spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM. Special Mint Sets replaced traditional proof sets from 1965 through 1967 and were struck with enhanced quality at the San Francisco facility. Attributed by VarietyVista with die classification UVC-109 and marker reference DMR-004, the die progressed through multiple stages: Stage A shows the reverse in early die state while the obverse is listed as DDO-002 also in early die state, Stage B has both reverse and obverse in mid die state, and Stage C in late die state remains unconfirmed. The pairing with DDO-002 on the obverse makes this a particularly interesting specimen, as collectors can potentially identify both a doubled die obverse and a doubled die reverse on the same coin. The triple spread across the reverse legends distinguishes DDR-006 from more common single-spread varieties and rewards examination under magnification.
