This experimental quarter carries the RB-1140 alloy designation from the International Nickel Company's 1964 silver crisis testing program. The 1100-series of INCO test strikes explored a specific family of copper-nickel compositions, with the RB-1140 variant near the end of this sub-series. These pieces were carefully preserved after testing, as each represented a significant investment in metallurgical research and development. The surviving examples allow modern numismatists to study the physical characteristics of alloy compositions that were evaluated but ultimately not selected for production coinage, providing insight into the decision-making process behind the Coinage Act of 1965.
