1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-012
ErrorDescription
Class II distorted hub doubling on the 1964-D Jefferson Nickel WDDR-012 produces a spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM that increases from left to right, along with a closer spread on STATES OF AMERICA — a progressive pattern characteristic of rotational hub misalignment. The reverse carries die scratches above the left porch of Monticello as diagnostic markers, while no significant obverse markers have been noted. Class II doubling creates variable displacement because the rotational misalignment produces minimal movement near the pivot point and increasing separation farther away, which is precisely the left-to-right graduation visible on the motto. The 1964 Denver Jefferson Nickel was the last business-strike issue to carry a mint mark before the Mint temporarily eliminated them in 1965 to discourage hoarding during the national coin shortage. This transitional significance, combined with the diagnostic progressive spread pattern, makes WDDR-012 a variety of interest to both series specialists and collectors of 1964–1965 era coinage.
