1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-009
ErrorDescription
Exhibiting Class II (Distorted Hub) doubling with a close spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, WDDR-009 of the 1964-D Jefferson Nickel shows doubling that increases in intensity from left to right across the inscription. This directional gradient — weakest at UNITED, strongest at AMERICA — provides a clear diagnostic cue, as the distorted hub's deformation varied across the die face during hubbing. The 1964-D was produced in enormous quantities as Denver responded to the nationwide coin shortage that would soon prompt silver's removal from circulating coinage. Diagnostic die markers assist with attribution: the obverse carries a die scratch to the upper left of the I in IN, while the reverse shows a die gouge inside the upper left upright of the first U in UNUM and a die scratch below CEL of MONTICELLO. These markers create a reliable constellation for identifying this specific working die. The close spread characteristic of Class II doubling means collectors should examine the reverse lettering at moderate magnification, as the separation between original and doubled images is narrow.
