Documented by the Wexler Team, the 1964-D Washington quarter WDDR-002 presents a close spread towards the center on both branch ends and some of the serifs in QUARTER DOLLAR on John Flanagan's reverse design. The "towards the center" spread direction describes a compression-type displacement where the secondary hub impression shifted inward relative to the primary, causing peripheral design elements to show doubling while central features remain unaffected — a characteristic consistent with Class IV Offset Hub Doubling in the Wexler classification system, where the die tilted during the secondary hubbing. The branch ends, being among the outermost reverse design elements, experienced the greatest displacement and show the most visible doubling, while serif details on the denomination provide additional confirmation points at a finer scale. Obverse die markers are unremarkable, but the reverse carries a distinctive diagnostic: a small die gouge (appearing as a raised dot on struck coins) positioned to the right of the T in UNITED. This die gouge — produced by a small depression in the die surface from accidental damage or a foreign particle — provides a precise identification point independent of the doubling itself. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1964-D 25¢ WDDR-002, this variety was struck at Denver during the final year of 90% silver quarter production, when approximately 704.1 million quarters were produced in an enormous output driven by the nationwide coin shortage.
