Description

Showing a spread toward the center on at least UNITED and ONE CENT, the 1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-020 is a variety with an extensive set of die markers that document both mechanical wear and die clash activity. The obverse carries a strong die scratch running northeast from the upper left B in LIBERTY — a bold marker that should be among the first features visible when examining a candidate coin. The reverse presents a rich diagnostic landscape: a die scratch (or possible crack) extending east inside the O in ONE, a strong horizontal die scratch positioned midway between the Memorial and the E in ONE and C in CENT, a short die scratch running south from under the lower left Memorial, a die crack on the right cornice, and doubled die clash marks under the lower right Memorial. The presence of doubled die clash marks is particularly noteworthy — these marks occur when a die that already carries a doubled design clashes with its opposing die (strikes it without a planchet between them), transferring ghost images of the opposing design that are themselves affected by the doubling already present in the die. This creates a complex visual signature on the die surface that adds another layer of diagnostic utility for attribution. The "at least" qualifier in the doubling description suggests that additional design elements beyond UNITED and ONE CENT may also show evidence of the spread. This variety was struck during the Denver Mint's 1964 production of 3,799,071,500 cents, the highest single-mint output for the denomination. Struck on a 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc planchet at 3.11 grams and 19mm diameter.
