1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-019

Description

Exhibiting a close spread toward the center on UNITED and ONE CENT, the 1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-019 is a Class II doubled die whose hub shifted inward during the die manufacturing process, producing a secondary image that compresses the affected design elements toward the coin's center. The die markers provide a multi-point diagnostic framework: on the obverse, a die gouge appears under the lower left of the 6 in the date — a marker positioned within the date itself that should be straightforward to locate on candidate coins. The reverse markers include a die scratch running from the lower I in UNITED east to just over the left cornice, a horizontal die scratch through and above Lincoln's head within the Memorial, a vertical die gouge extending from the lower E in ONE, and a diagonal die crack inside the lower N in CENT. The diagonal die crack inside the N in CENT is a progressive feature that would have worsened as the die continued in service, meaning that later die state examples may show the crack extending beyond its initially cataloged position. Variety collectors should note that the close spread toward the center on both UNITED and ONE CENT indicates that the doubling affects design elements at different heights on the reverse — the upper inscription and the lower denomination — suggesting that the hub displacement was oriented in a direction that produced visible effects across a broad vertical range of the die face. This variety was struck at the Denver Mint during the 1964 production of 3,799,071,500 cents, the last year Denver cents carried the "D" mint mark. Struck on a 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc planchet at 3.11 grams.
