1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-011
Error
Description
Showing a spread on ONE CENT and the designer's initials FG, the 1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-011 is a variety whose doubling is concentrated on the lower reverse elements beneath the Memorial structure. The die markers provide essential diagnostics for attribution: the obverse bears a short heavy die scratch just to the right of Lincoln's beard, while the reverse exhibits heavy die scratches through ONE CENT, through AMER in AMERICA, and in Memorial bay 2. The heavy scratching through the lettering on the reverse suggests that this die underwent significant surface contact during its service — whether from die polishing operations, foreign material in the press, or accumulated wear from the high-speed production at the Denver Mint. These scratches, while representing die deterioration, serve the collector as reliable diagnostic markers because they are unique to this specific working die and should appear in identical positions on every coin struck from it. The concentration of doubling on ONE CENT and FG, without mention of effects on the upper reverse inscriptions or the Memorial architecture itself, suggests that the hub displacement during the hubbing process was oriented in a direction that primarily affected the lower portion of the reverse die. This variety emerged from the Denver Mint's historic 1964 production campaign of 3,799,071,500 Lincoln cents, the highest single-mint output for the denomination to that point and the last year that Denver cents bore the "D" mint mark before the 1965-67 suspension. Struck on a 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc planchet weighing 3.11 grams at 19mm diameter.
