1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-007

Description

Showing a spread on USA, ONE CENT, and both sides of the Lincoln Memorial, the 1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-007 is accompanied by a detailed set of die markers that reveal the working history of the die during its service at the Denver Mint. The obverse carries heavy die scratches through ERTY in LIBERTY, a feature that should be immediately visible under moderate magnification. The reverse die markers are more numerous: die gouges appear to the right of the lower O and inside the upper right N in ONE, a dot-like die gouge sits to the left of the C in CENT, and a short heavy die gouge is positioned under the step just to the right of the statue of Lincoln within the Memorial. Die scratches appear on the Memorial roof above the fourth column and the tenth column. Additionally, die clash marks are present over the upper right Memorial and below the lower left Memorial, indicating that this die experienced at least one clashing event during its operational life — a collision between the obverse and reverse dies when a planchet failed to feed between them, transferring faint ghost images of the opposing die's design elements onto the die face. These clash marks, combined with the multiple die scratches and gouges, paint a picture of a die that saw significant use and accumulated characteristic wear during the Denver Mint's high-volume 1964 production campaign of 3,799,071,500 cents. The 1964-D cent was the last Denver Mint issue to bear a mint mark before the 1965-67 suspension. Struck on a 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc planchet at 19mm diameter and 3.11 grams.
