1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-006

Description

With a spread toward the center affecting USA, both sides of the Memorial, ONE CENT, and the designer's initials FG, the 1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-006 is a variety whose doubling is distributed across the full breadth of the Gasparro reverse design. The die markers recorded for this variety are particularly extensive: on the obverse, numerous die scratches run in a southwest-to-northeast direction from the 9 and the mint mark area, and a dot-like die gouge appears over the B in LIBERTY. The reverse presents an especially rich diagnostic landscape, led by a strong die scratch or gouge extending west from the E in CENT that curves up slightly and continues through the C in CENT — a prominent marker that should be immediately apparent under magnification. Additional reverse features include a short die gouge running northeast from the bottom of the seventh bay, evidence of a die clash over the right Memorial, and numerous die scratches running northwest to southeast through the right side of the Memorial structure. The presence of die clash evidence on the reverse indicates that this die experienced a clashing event — a direct contact between the obverse and reverse dies without a planchet between them — at some point during its service life, leaving transferred impressions of the opposing die's design on the reverse surface. This variety was produced at the Denver Mint during the 1964 production campaign that yielded 3,799,071,500 cents, the highest single-facility Lincoln cent mintage in history. Struck on a 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc planchet weighing 3.11 grams.

• Obverse: Numerous die scratches run SW/NE from the 9 and mint mark. Die gouge (dot) over B in LIBERTY. Reverse: Strong die scratch/gouge west from E in CENT curving up slightly and going through the C in CENT. Die gouge (short) running NE from the bottom of the seventh bay. Evidence of a die clash over the right memorial. Numerous NW/SE die scratches through the right side of the memorial.
