1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005
Error
Description
Exhibiting a spread toward the center on multiple reverse design elements — USA, the lower left and right Memorial, ONE CENT, and the designer's initials FG — the 1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005 presents collectors with a variety whose doubling affects a broad swath of the Gasparro reverse design. The die markers cataloged for this variety provide reliable diagnostic features for attribution: on the obverse, a short die gouge appears between the lower O and D in GOD, and a die gouge sits next to Lincoln's bust directly under the T in LIBERTY. The reverse carries two horizontal die scratches just over Lincoln's head within the Memorial, a dot-like die gouge between the M and E in AMERICA, a short heavy die scratch in the field above the lower left Memorial, and two weak horizontal die scratches in the lower last bay. The spread toward the center affecting such a wide range of reverse elements — from the upper inscription to the architectural details to the denomination and designer's initials — indicates that the hub displacement during the hubbing process, though slight, was oriented in a direction that produced visible secondary images across most of the reverse design. This variety originated at the Denver Mint during its 1964 production of 3,799,071,500 Lincoln cents, a record-setting output driven by the national coin shortage. The 1964-D cent marks the last year of mint mark usage on Denver coinage before the 1965-67 removal. Struck on a 3.11-gram, 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc planchet at 19mm diameter.
