Description

Produced at the Denver Mint during the only year the Kennedy Half Dollar was struck in 90% silver, this DDR-003 shows light spread on OF AMERICA, the stars positioned beneath those letters, and the arrows clutched in the eagle's talon on Frank Gasparro's reverse. VarietyVista cataloged the die under UVC-449 with die marker reference DMR-031, noting the ODV-002/RDV-002 die pairing identified by the distinctive Flared G characteristic. The obverse die is listed as DDO-017, making this a combination variety where both obverse and reverse hub doubling appear on the same coin. Die stage documentation records Stage A with the reverse at early die state and the obverse DDO-017 also at early die state, while Stage B at mid-die state and Stage C at late die state remain unconfirmed. The 1964-D Kennedy Half Dollar saw massive production at Denver as the nation rushed to acquire the new memorial coin, and the only-year 90% silver composition makes every 1964 variety inherently significant to collectors. The pairing with DDO-017 elevates DDR-003 beyond a standalone reverse variety, offering cherrypickers the opportunity to document both doubled die obverse and reverse on a single specimen.
