1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-026
Error
Description
A dual-variety coin of particular interest to Lincoln cent specialists, the 1964-D WDDR-026 (Wexler Variety ID: 1964-D 1¢ WDDR-026) combines a doubled die reverse with a repunched mint mark on the obverse, making it one of the more collectible entries in the 1964-D DDR catalog. The reverse exhibits a close spread toward the center on ONE CENT, while the obverse carries a mint mark listed as WRPM-015 — a D/D East repunched mint mark, where the "D" was applied to the die twice with the secondary impression displaced to the east of the primary. The convergence of two distinct die varieties on a single coin — one from the reverse hubbing process and one from the mint mark punching operation — significantly elevates the numismatic appeal of this variety. Reverse die markers include a small die gouge southwest of the U in UNITED, small die gouges to the left of the center of the E in UNITED, and die cracks running down the first two Memorial columns, indicating the die had accumulated meaningful wear during its service life. The die cracks on the Memorial columns are especially useful as identification aids, as their progressive nature means they grew more prominent as additional coins were struck from the die. This variety was produced at the Denver Mint during the record 1964 production of 3,799,071,500 Lincoln cents, an output necessitated by the national coin shortage. The 1964-D cent was the last Denver Mint Lincoln cent to display the "D" mint mark before the 1965-67 suspension. Struck on a 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc planchet weighing 3.11 grams at 19mm diameter.
