1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-013

Description

Exhibiting a spread toward the center on UNITED, ONE CENT, and the designer's initials FG, the 1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-013 (Wexler Variety ID: 1964-D 1¢ WDDR-013, no additional cross-references known) is a Class II doubled die whose hub shifted inward between impressions during the die manufacturing process. The die markers for this variety are distributed across both sides of the coin: on the obverse, a die gouge appears to the lower right of the N in IN, while the reverse carries strong die gouges to the right of the lower E in ONE, inside the C in CENT, and to the left of the lower T in CENT, along with a die gouge at the top of the eleventh Memorial bay. The strong reverse die gouges near ONE CENT are particularly useful diagnostics because their position within the same area where the doubling is most visible provides a two-factor identification method — collectors can look for both the characteristic spread toward the center and the specific die gouges that confirm they are examining a coin from this particular working die. The Denver Mint produced 3,799,071,500 Lincoln cents in 1964, the highest single-mint total for the denomination at the time, consuming thousands of reverse working dies over the production year.
