1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-012
Error
Description
Presenting a close spread that manifests as notching on USA, FG, and ONE CENT, the 1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-012 (Wexler Variety ID: 1964-D 1¢ WDDR-012, with no additional cross-references known) exhibits a doubling pattern where the secondary image creates a notched or serrated appearance along the affected lettering rather than a clearly separated secondary outline. The die markers cataloged by the Wexler Team reveal a die with considerable character: on the obverse, the 19 in the date shows heavy polishing, suggesting that the die underwent aggressive lapping to restore surface quality during its service life. The reverse presents a wealth of diagnostic features — a heavy die gouge from the right of the lower bar and a vertical die gouge near the rim under the aforementioned gouge to the right of the E in ONE, a die gouge from the lower left C in CENT, roughly horizontal die scratches through ONE CENT, and die gouges (appearing as dots) to the right of the R, inside the C, and scratches through AMER in AMERICA. Additionally, die clash evidence is present in bays 7, 8, and 9 of the Memorial, indicating that this die experienced at least one clashing event where the obverse and reverse dies struck each other without a planchet between them. Additional die state data may be available in the Wexler files. This variety was struck during the Denver Mint's 1964 production of 3,799,071,500 cents on a 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc planchet, the last year Denver cents bore the "D" mint mark.
