1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002
Error
Description
A multi-stage doubled die reverse variety attributed by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as CONECA 5-R-II-C (Wexler Variety ID: 1964-D 1¢ WDDR-002), this entry documents a Class II doubled die whose spread toward the center is visible on USA, ONE CENT, both memorial bases, and the designer's initials FG on the reverse. The die progressed through at least two identifiable stages during its service life at the Denver Mint. In Stage A, no notable obverse die markers were recorded, while the reverse exhibited die gouges well to the right of the T in CENT and a die scratch running from the upper E to the N in CENT. Stage B introduced new diagnostic features as the die accumulated wear and damage: a die scratch running northeast through the upper right 9 in the date appeared on the obverse, while on the reverse the CENT die scratch remained visible alongside numerous additional die scratches throughout the field, including a strong scratch running to the right of the E in ONE, and a die clash became present in bay 3 of the Memorial. Additional die state data may be available in the Wexler files. The CONECA classification 5-R-II-C indicates a Class II spread (toward center) with a specific spread direction and magnitude that distinguishes it within the CONECA system. Struck during the Denver Mint's 1964 production run of 3,799,071,500 cents — the highest single-mint Lincoln cent output at that time — this variety was produced on a 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc planchet weighing 3.11 grams.
