Description

Tracked by VarietyVista as UVC-453 with DMR-032, the 1964-D Kennedy Half Dollar DDR-004 presents a light spread on "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," the heraldic stars positioned under those letters, and the stars located between the rays of the presidential seal. The spread across both lettering and star elements creates a complex doubling pattern that affects multiple tiers of the reverse design simultaneously. This variety is classified with ODV-002/RDV-002, the "Flared G" variant — a reverse die variety identified by the distinctive serif treatment on the letter G in the motto, where the lower serif flares outward more broadly than on the standard RDV-001 "Straight G" dies. This Flared G distinction is one of the most important die variety classifications in first-year Kennedy Half Dollar research, as it separates the die population into two major groups that track through multiple DDO, DDR, and RPM listings. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in Early Die State is unconfirmed; Stage B shows both reverse and obverse at Mid Die State; Stage C places both in Late Die State. Denver's massive 1964 half dollar production of 156,205,446 coins consumed enormous numbers of die pairs, and DDR-004 represents just one of many doubled die reverses identified from this unprecedented production run. The 1964-D Kennedy Half Dollar's 90% silver composition, combined with the emotional significance of the JFK memorial coin, created both immediate hoarding and long-term collector demand. Variety collectors find the first-year Kennedy Halves particularly rewarding because the combination of high production volume, public attention, and intensive numismatic study has produced a deep and well-documented variety catalog.
