1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-020
ErrorDescription
Documented by Brian A. Ribar and cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1964-D WDDR-020, this Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse presents Class II distorted hub doubling with a close spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM. Class II doubling arises from the hub and die not being perfectly parallel during the hubbing process, producing a warping displacement that varies in direction and magnitude across the die face. The close classification indicates the secondary image sits near the primary, requiring magnification to resolve clearly. A notable aspect of this variety is its die marriage with a doubled obverse: the obverse die is listed as 1964-D 5c WDDO-005, creating a DDO/DDR combination that doubles the variety interest. Reverse die markers include a die gouge on the lower right side of the S of PLURIBUS and a die gouge below the R of PLURIBUS. The obverse markers are those documented under the companion WDDO-005 attribution. The 1964-D Jefferson Nickel's enormous mintage of over 1.78 billion coins consumed hundreds of die pairs, and twenty documented doubled die reverses reflects the inevitable hubbing misalignments that occur across such extensive die production. Each DDR represents a unique working die that received a misaligned hub impression, and the systematic documentation of twenty such events provides insight into the frequency of hub alignment errors during this peak-production year at the Denver Mint. Collectors who locate a specimen carrying both the DDO-005 obverse and DDR-020 reverse obtain a die marriage where both sides display hub doubling — a particularly desirable combination in die variety numismatics.
