Description

Light spread and extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA identify this 1964-D Jefferson Nickel DDR-009, a regular strike from the final year Denver produced nickels before the 1965-1967 no-mintmark era when mintmarks were removed from all coinage to discourage hoarding. Die markers UVC-1761 and DMR-018 anchor the VarietyVista attribution. Three die stages are documented: Stage A at Early-Mid Die State captures the doubling while still crisp, while Stages B and C at Mid and Late Die State remain unconfirmed. The 1964-D Jefferson Nickel had enormous mintage as the Mint ramped production to meet coin shortages that would soon prompt eliminating mintmarks entirely.
