1964-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-008
Error
Description
Denver's staggering production of over 1.78 billion Jefferson Nickels in 1964 — driven by the coin shortage crisis that preceded the elimination of silver from circulating coinage — created conditions where eight or more doubled die reverse varieties could emerge from the enormous number of die pairs consumed during that record-breaking year. DDR-008 shows medium spread combined with extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and both edges of the Monticello building, a mixed-class combination where directional spread and distorted hub effects appear together on the same die. The involvement of both building edges — the architectural outline of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello — extends the doubling beyond text into the pictorial design, affecting the structural lines that define the building's silhouette. Die markers UVC-1701 and DMR-016 serve as secondary attribution diagnostics. Medium spread indicates clearly visible doubling under standard magnification, and the additional extra thickness component means some elements appear both spread and heavier than normal. Eight documented DDRs for the 1964-D nickel barely scratches the surface of what the 1.78-billion-coin production might contain, and the enormous surviving population means affordable specimens remain available to collectors willing to search rolls and bags of this common date for uncommon die varieties.
