1963 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-027

Description

Spreading toward the center of the coin, the hub doubling on WDDR-027 of the 1963 Roosevelt dime affects UNITED, the ST of STATES, E PLU of PLURIBUS, some olive leaves, and the lower olive stem on John Sinnock's reverse design. The Wexler Team documented this variety with no other known cross-references. Center-directed spread is characteristic of Class VI Distended Hub Doubling, where the hub slightly contracts or expands between impressions — though the specific class designation for this variety should be confirmed against Wexler attribution records. Obverse die markers include a short north-south die gouge to the right of the upper bar of the E in LIBERTY and a die chip (dot) on the lower right outside area of Roosevelt's nose. The reverse carries a die chip (dot) in the field above the left side of the left dot separator. Philadelphia struck over 123 million dimes in 1963, the penultimate year of the 90% silver composition, and varieties from this date carry the dual appeal of attributable hub doubling and precious metal content. The center-directed spread pattern affects design elements progressively — UNITED near the rim shows the most displacement, while elements closer to center show less — consistent with a radial contraction of the secondary hub impression relative to the first.
