1963 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-014
Error
Description
Among the final-year Franklin Half Dollars, DDR-014 preserves medium spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF, with doubling intensity decreasing from left to right — a directional gradient that helps classify the hub displacement geometry. Die stage tracking provides a detailed production timeline: UVC-263, DMR-040. Stage A shows both reverse and obverse in Early Die State (EDS), indicating the variety can be found on crisp early strikes. Stage B transitions to Mid-Die State (MDS), unconfirmed. Stage C reaches Late Die State (LDS), also unconfirmed. John R. Sinnock's Franklin Half Dollar design, in production from 1948 through 1963, was replaced mid-year when the Kennedy Half Dollar was rushed into production following President Kennedy's assassination in November 1963. The 1963 date therefore represents the series' terminal year, and varieties from this final issue hold special significance for Franklin Half Dollar specialists. Philadelphia struck approximately 22.16 million half dollars in 1963 before the design change. Cataloged by VarietyVista, DDR-014 offers collectors a doubled die variety from the closing chapter of one of America's most underappreciated mid-century coin designs.
