1962 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

Close spread toward the center manifests as notches on the upper letters of UNITED and extra thickness on E PLU (E PLURIBUS UNUM) on the 1962 Proof Roosevelt Dime WDDR-002. Attributed by the Wexler Team with variety ID 1962 10¢ Pr WDDR-002, the reverse carries a diagnostic short die scratch to the left of the upper E in EPU, while no significant obverse markers have been noted. The notching — small step-like indentations at the edges of letters where the doubled image slightly overlaps the primary — is characteristic of very close hub displacement and requires careful magnified examination. The 1962 Proof Roosevelt Dime was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver during the penultimate year of silver-composition proof dimes. As WDDR-002, this was the second documented doubled die reverse for the 1962 proof date, indicating early discovery in the variety research process for this issue.
