Description

Displaying Class II distorted hub doubling that increases in intensity from left to right, this 1962-D Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse shows spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with additional doubling on CENTS and LO of MONTICELLO. The left-to-right increase in displacement is consistent with a hub that made progressively fuller contact toward the right side of the die face during the errant hubbing impression. Reverse die markers are particularly abundant: two short, nearly vertical die gouges appear near the rim between F of OF and A of AMERICA, a die gouge sits in the field to the left of the left arch, a die scratch runs above US of PLURIBUS, and a die dot appears to the left of the second L of MONTICELLO. No obverse die markers have been noted. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar under Wexler Variety ID: 1962-D WDDR-006, the concentration of reverse die markers provides multiple secondary attribution points beyond the doubling itself, making this variety relatively straightforward to confirm on well-preserved Denver Mint specimens from this high-mintage early 1960s date.
