Description

Attributed by John A. Wexler, the founder of modern doubled die attribution methodology, the 1962-D WDDR-002 is a Class II distorted hub doubled die reverse on the Denver Mint Jefferson nickel. The doubling manifests on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA with increasing intensity from left to right, and on UNUM, a progressive spread pattern characteristic of Class II hub distortion where the displacement varies across the die face. The obverse carries three die markers: a die gouge inside the upper portion of the U of TRUST, a slanted die scratch between the 9 and 6 of the date, and a light die scratch running from the E of WE to the tip of Jefferson's nose. No reverse die markers beyond the doubling itself were noted. Cataloged under the Wexler designation 1962-D WDDR-002, this variety bears the attribution of the specialist whose systematic approach to classifying doubled dies established the framework used throughout the hobby today. The increasing spread from left to right across the AMERICA legend provides a clear visual gradient that collectors can use to confirm the variety, with the rightmost letters showing the most pronounced displacement.
